On the afternoon of December 5, 2023, Claudia Lopez, Mayor of Bogota, Colombia, and Sergio Cabrera, Ambassador of Colombia to China, visited SINOVAC, accompanied by Ruth Amparo Medina, Director of International Relations of Bogota City, Oscar Felipe Rueda, Commercial Counselor of the Embassy of Colombia in China, and Daniel Mesa, First Secretary of the Embassy. Accompanied by Yin Weidong, Chairman, President and CEO of the company, Yang Guang, Chief Commercial Officer, and Gao Qiang, Chief Operating Officer.
Previously, SINOVAC successfully won the bidding for the Bogotá Vaccine Plant Project ("Bogotá Project") and entered into a strategic cooperation with the Bogotá Municipal Government, in which the two parties set up a joint venture company, BogotáBio, to promote the localized production of a variety of vaccines and new vaccines in Colombia. The joint venture, BogotáBio, will promote the local production of various vaccines in Colombia as well as the research and development of new vaccines.
Lopez has high hopes for the Bogotá project, which she believes will give Colombia access to vaccine production capacity and previously unavailable vaccine technologies that will help the country better meet future public health challenges.
Yin Weidong said that the Bogota project will not only benefit Colombia, but will also help prevent and control diseases in more countries in Latin America. After the outbreak of the New Crown epidemic, SINOVAC and its Colombian partners have already established good cooperation, and the two sides will carry out broader cooperation to meet future public health challenges.
Colombia was one of the first countries to use Kerlaflo®, the inactivated vaccine from SINOVAC, and in March 2021, when the third shipment of Kerlaflo® arrived in Bogotá, President Xi Jinping delivered a video address to the Colombian people at the invitation of former Colombian President Duque. In his speech, President Xi mentioned that he hoped the governments and people of China and Colombia would work together to strengthen friendship and cooperation in various fields, including the fight against epidemics, for the betterment of the two peoples.
During the talks during this visit, Ambassador Cabrera believed that the Bogota project is a model of cooperation between China and Colombia, and that the two countries will continue to develop more cooperation in various fields.
